WASHINGTON — The makers of Viagra and a drug similar to its blue pill have been forced to pay more than $1.3 billion in fines for illegally promoting the erectile dysfunction drug.
The drug maker, Pfizer Inc., is facing a $2 billion fine for its conduct that has been attributed to its use of a prescription drug called sildenafil, a drug similar to the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The charges are part of a criminal investigation into the company that is being led by the Food and Drug Administration.
"Viagra and Viagra-style drugs are approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but they are illegal in many other countries," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas). "This is a serious situation and we will be investigating it."
Viagra has been available since 1998. But that's only one of the drugs in the category. It's available over-the-counter and has been used to treat male sexual problems. In 2016, the FDA found Viagra was not only adulterated, but was also improperly dispensed and sold to patients with heart disease.
The company has not said how many fines have been imposed by the FDA, but it has said the number of patients in the investigation is "great."
Pfizer has not made a comment.
Pfizer Inc., which makes the drug, is the largest drug maker in the world. It has about $1 billion in worldwide sales.
But drug maker Pfizer says it is working with the FDA to take enforcement actions to stop the illegal practice.
In December, the company said the FDA has "recommended a response to the charge."
